Cedar Fair has decided to pull the plug on FearVR at all three parks, Knott's Berry Farm, Great America and Canada's Wonderland due to a small group of vocal people who never experienced the attraction. I was very excited to take part in this attraction and I am very disappointed to see it go so soon and under such horrible circumstances.
Knott's Scary Farm is an adult orientated event and has always pushed the boundaries of technology and their guests to create interesting experiences. I think this was handled completely wrong from Cedar Fair's side and the protesters side. What should have happened was an open dialog, allow the protesters to experience it and see that it was actually a paranormal experience and in no way made fun of or light of people with mental health issues. The show is actually much more closely related to this summers hit Netflix show Stranger Things and featured a girl who was demonically possessed and had telekinetic powers, who escapes from her holding area and is trying to escape the research facility. Of course being an adult event, it was a little more gruesome than Stranger Things but the parallels are there. The other issue now is just a few years ago a petition was sent around to have Knott's pull the new Feista De Los Muertos scare zone and Knott's chose to fully ignore it. How does it look on a company to ignore the issues the Hispanic community have for the event, yet when a rich powerful white family has issues with something, they immediately bend a knee and remove the attraction. I am fully in the camp of the fans of Knott's Scary Farm to bring the attraction back and saying no to ignorant social justice warriors getting to sensor what I can and can not participate in. If you agree I urge you to sign the petition at the link below and lets show Cedar Fair that we want these wonderful experiences and for them to continue to push the envelope of fear! Hobb's Grove - 14265 E Goodfellow Ave., Sanger, CA 93657 Always rated one of the Top haunted attractions in the country. If you can make the drive up to Hobb's Grove I highly suggest you do. Get there early! Winchester Mystery House - 525 South Winchester Blvd., San Jose, Ca 95128 Halloween Candle Light tours will be offered this year. 10 select nights in October: 7 & 8, 14 & 15, 21 & 22 and 28 - 31. I will always have a soft spot for Knott's Scary Farm. As a born and raised Southern Californian it was part of growing up and I even worked the event for several years. However even I will admit that perhaps the Knott's team got a little complacent and allowed other events to over take their former role as leaders in the Halloween game. This year, with their stellar line up of mazes, shows and experiences it seems that once again Knott's is taking chances and they are paying off. HorrorBuzz.com wrote: We are very happy to report that this is also one of the more consistent years in the way of overall quality and execution. For the most part, everything from the mazes and shows to the scare zones were on point, with a few exceptions. CLICK HERE FOR THEIR FULL REVIEW Designer Jon Cooke is once again going high tech and his trio of designs are being hailed for their story and scare factor. Above left is Shadowlands Jon's new maze based on Japanese myths and legends. To the right is Paranormal Inc. last years break out hit with fans. Below is Black Ops Infected, the zombie shooter that Jon spear headed the previous two years in Camp Snoopy. This year the infected have taken over Calico City back stage near Mystery Lodge. Westcoaster.net did a comprehensive semi spoiler free review of opening night. CLICK HERE FOR THEIR REVIEW What you need to know:
I talked to my contacts, read the reviews and now it's time for a game plan for those going without Front of the Line passes. 1. Get there early, I suggest doing the pre-scare meal giving you early access to the mazes. 2. Go straight to Black Op's Infected at Mystery Lodge, in our podcast we discussed that this might get big lines and it looks like we were right, hitting close to 2 hours on opening night. 3. After infected hit up The Red Barn (which is right outside of Black Op's exit) then move on to Shadowlands which is underneath Xcelerator. These high tech mazes are great but they also tend to be slow loaders which create longer lines. 4. Next head to Dead of Winter, and sign up for FEAR VR 5150 if you want to try out the new VR experience. 5. Then you'll want to visit The Gunslingers Grave which is near Silver Bullet Congratulations, You've done all the in park mazes and the rest are located backstage past Ghostrider's exit. Once back there the mazes are so close together I suggest just checking the lines for which one looks the lightest doing them in that order. Hope this helps and I will see you in the FOG!!! Today we had the pleasure of attending the opening day of the Irvine Park Railroad's Pumpkin Patch. It was a wonderful family friendly event and the kids had a blast! The cost is reasonable, it's $3-$5 to get in to Irvine Regional Park and then admission to the pumpkin patch is free and works on a ticket system. It's $5 per ticket and the tickets are good for the Train and Hay rides, Bounce Houses, Face Painting, and Carnival games. While doing all of that might put a sting in your wallet there are plenty of free activities as well. The favorite free activities this year were by far the Haunted House and the Hay Maze. The Haunted House is perfect for kids, just spooky scenes with music and anything that might be a little scary was placed higher up the walls so unless the kids really looked around they would miss them. Over all I would have to say this is the best event for kids in Orange County, CA and might even be worth a trip from farther areas like Riverside County. If you want to extend your day, the Orange County Zoo is just on the other side of Irvine Regional Park. Admission is only $2 per person and children 2 and under are free.

Now for the Throwback Thursday portion of the post. This past Halloween convention season I had the pleasure of working with the Decayed Brigade! I produced two shows worth of music and the Purge spoof intro for the first show they did every day at both Midsummer Scream and ScareLA. I was also their show runner, helping with lighting, props and audio. It was a very fun and it also afforded me a chance to get video of sliders in action that has never been caught before. I used a high speed camera shooting 250 frames per second in HD and I was able to capture just amazing footage! Check it out below! |
